The New World Spanish/English English/Spanish dictionary is very helpful in
learning Spanish. It has a pronunciation guide and a listing of all irregular
verbs. It is very comprehensive for a paper back dictionary.

This Spanish/English dictionary is the best I've used, primarily for the reasons
that it is very comprehensive, and it gives Spanish pronunciations, oddly
lacking from other such dictionaries.

I have purchased at least 6 different Spanish/English dictionaries and this is
the one I always come back to. I am currently using my second copy since the
first one fell apart. This one is held together with tape, lots and lots of
tape.
I almost always find the word I am looking for, and the definitions make sense,
and I am picky.
I have purchased at least 4 more of these as gifts.
So, my only complaint is that the binding is poor quality - the pages easily
come out. Fortunately, they can be taped back in, which adds to the character!

I am a high school ESL teacher for new immigrants to the U.S. Our school buys
the Merriam-Webster English-Spanish in bulk so each student has one that is easy
to carry around, and because they are cheaper. But after experimenting with
various dictionaries, I find that I much prefer to keep The New World dictionary
right beside me at my desk, when I'm standing at the overhead projector, when I
am circulating around the room to help students. I find The New World easier to
read and easier to use. For example, when looking at multiple meaning words such
as plot or setting, it is easier to pick out the language arts/literary
definition in The New World dictionary. It also offers more in the way of
support for people learning English or Spanish -- for example the section that
helps Spanish speakers understand English prefix/root/suffix is very useful to
ESL students and teachers in a high school setting. This year we are going to
buy several for each classroom that has ESL students in it.

I have been teaching English as a Second Language for many years and I have
become fluent in Spanish. This dictionary for Americans (North and South) is the
best for the money. It has many words that are American Spanish and American
English whereas many other more expensive dictionaries use European words and
sometimes spellings. It is not a good dictionary for travel but then I don't
think most are. I don't use a dictionary when on the road. The paper editions
wear out rapidly with moderate use but they are cheap enough. Do not waste time
and money on smaller dictionaries such as the Chicago. This one not only has
American language, it has many idioms, and a reasonable grammar section. I hope
this little gem never goes out of print.

Very descriptive, lots of examples in grammar. This should be the only
dictionary that a student will ever need. Everything is there. I have learned so
much from this dictionary.

PERFECT! Product in great quality. For my daughter's high school Spanish class.
Just what we needed! Thanks!

I bought the New World Spanish/English dictionary for college, and hated it. It
seems to be missing a lot of words. Looking words up feels more frustrating,
because they are often missing, and because this dictionary follows the practice
of putting "ch-" after "co-" and the other C words. It's hard to explain. I just
don't love the New World the way I love my Chicago.
The Chicago English-Spanish / Español-Inglés was recommended by my highschool
Spanish teacher -- I don't regret buying it. Classmates who bought other
ditionaries (such as the Oxford, I think it was) often needed to borrow mine. It
simply has more of the words we needed to look up and is fun to use and browse
through. For example, the New World has the verb reference section in the middle
of the dictionary, but the Chicago has it in front, where it's quicker to
locate.

The most complete and easy to read. Many phrases, just the best dictionary!

There may be better dictionaries to keep on the desk in your study, but they are
impractical, because of their bulk, to bring with you when traveling. On the
other hand, the so-called 'phrase books' put out by Berlitz and others are
little more than worthless. This dictionary is the ideal compromise. It is small
enough to fit into a tote bag, carryon, or backpack, yet inclusive enough to
have just about any word you might need (except vulgar or 'dirty' words--those
you'll have to learn from the locals). Of course, you'll need to know the basics
of Spanish grammar, but this dictionary eliminates the need to rack your brain
searching for a word. I have been using it in my travels to Latin countries
since the 1990s. Highly recommended.

This is highly recommended for students in high school and early college
Spanish.

The book came in earlier than expected and arrived in the described condition.

I've been using this dictionary since I began learning to speak Spanish in the
early 1990s, and since then it has found a permanent position on my desk.
An important thing to remember with a language-to-language dictionary is that
you're not looking up definitions, but rather synonyms in another language. For
this reason the accuracy and completeness is important. This dictionary does a
good job of accounting for mulitple definitions and uses of individual words in
both languanges, and goes some of the way in outlining phrases.
The layout is easy on the eyes, and there is also a very useful section in the
middle between the Spanish and English sides on Spanish grammar.

I looked and looked before I bought this dictionary. I was looking for
thoroughness primarily. This one has that. I also liked the typeface used with
the entries being somewhat larger than typical for a dictionary this vast and
nicely done in a clearly readable bold print; makes it very easy to use.
As many others have mentioned, it really is quite thick and heavy. So much so
that if your going to be hauling this around alot you might want to consider
something with either a smaller typeface of fewer entries. It claims to have
70,000 words and 1,376 pages, just to give you an idea.

This second edition has over 3,000 new entries and translations which reflect
recent changes in business, technology, medicine and other areas. This mammoth
dictionary is a very user friendly resource which not only gives the
translation, but also the context, and in many cases, the appropriate idiomatic
expression.
I had the first edition of this dictionary back when I took high school Spanish
in the 1970's. I loved it then, and when I recently made the decision to take up
this beautiful language again, I picked this dictionary from among several
choices.
This is an essential reference addition for anyone learning Spanish, whether on
your own, or as part of a class.

This is the best dictionary of all the dictionaries that I have purchased over
the years. I use my current one daily and am buying one for one of the mothers
of my bilingual class so that she can learn English along with her child.
Everyone who has seen this dictionary has wanted one. I will always check here
first. Thanks

As a 3rd grade bilingual teacher, Spanish/English dictionaries are a must in the
classroom. This volume is more than adequate--you are certain to get your
money's worth, as far as finding the exact "sense" of the word you are looking
for. The only problem, is that it is quite thick for a paperback volume. It is
one of those books where you hold down the excess with your opposite forearm
while trying to judge the thickness of how much to turn in order to get to the
desired letter with the fingers of both hands. If you have little fingers using
it, it will very quickly curl up from both front and back. If you are a
backpack-toting dictionary-hauler, or if you read anywhere other than at a flat
surface while using your dictionary, it might be a little easier going to to
Merriam Webster's--which is a bit smaller in thickness, but works quite well. I
have found the New World dictionary even bulky for me--a petite adult. As far as
content quality, however, there is no better buy for the money.

I am just learning Spanish and I needed a good reference dictionary. I find this
one to be very easy to use and it provides expanations so that I can quickly
understand what I need to know. It has over 1000 pages of text going in both
directions. ... You just can't beat the price for what you get here.

As a Spanish teacher, I've reviewed several low-cost dictionaries to recommend
to my students. This one is the best I've seen as it not only gives the word,
but the usage or sense in which it is used. For example, a student wrote that he
liked Saturday because it was his "day off". The dictionary he used only had the
Spanish words listed in alphabetical order, so he wrote "mi día apagado". Had he
used this dictionary, he would have known that "apagado" refers to lights that
are extinguished.

Among bilingual English/Spanish dictionaries, this is the one that fulfills all
needs. It has an excellent list of words, and clearly indicates gender and uses
(as nouns, adjectives...). The explanation of prefixes and suffixes is
particularly useful, and frequently is neglected in such dictionaries. Best of
all is the summary of grammar which, although brief, is amazingly comprehensive.
The paperback version is compact enough to be convenient for travellers through
the Americas, and the pronunciation guides are effective in both directions (if
you read the explanation of the phonetic symbols).
