Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4-This "Spanish starter pack" is clearly designed for
home use, but many of the components (also available separately) would be
appropriate for public library circulation. There is no one central piece,
which may confuse parents on where to begin with using the kit. The book,
Help Your Child with a Foreign Language, is a reprint of a 1994 title, with
an updated section on "Useful Addresses." Not directly tied to the other
materials in the kit, it is a more general resource to educate parents on
getting their child foreign-language-ready. The other materials do integrate
concepts and style. The flash cards illustrate one word per card, and
include simple nouns, colors, numbers, and seasons. There are several blank
cards to encourage exploring further vocabulary. The Missing Cat is an
engaging bilingual story introducing many everyday words and phrases. The
audiocassette provides the narration for the story on one side, with songs
to complement it on the reverse side. Most tunes will be familiar to
American children; others are from popular children's songs from other
cultures. The music is catchy and the accents authentic and clear. Language
purists will note that the word list in the back of this book does not
include Spanish articles, so integral to learning this language. First 100
Spanish Words is a picture dictionary. The colorful packaging will have kid
appeal. One must question the portion of a letter to parents at the
beginning of The Missing Cat that states that "...by about the age of four,
many children enjoy hearing stories for as long as 15 minutes." This
statement seriously underestimates the listening ability of children. This
package is a bargain for all the material that's included.

My three year old and I have been using the pack for the past few weeks and
already she's singing parts of the songs, counting, and using simple terms and
phrases. The pack has not only well balanced materials it is also fun. In my
daughter's opinion putting in the story tape and looking at the flash cards is
just another game to play. The parents' guide has given helpful information and
ideas so that I can create a foundation for sharing a new language with my
daughter. It is clear, fun, and eye cathing. She (and I) have been able to pick
up words quite easily. Very enjoyable!
